As a child he was good at chess, taking part in a chess tournament in 1895 and writing a series of letters to the Sydney Morning Herald on chess. In 1910 he married Amy Neal.

From 1936 the Sands Directory lists him as a homoeopathist, living at 10 Warrane Road, Chatswood. He died in 1942.
